ROBERTO GIL, Casa Kids Collection Design, Inc., Brooklyn, NY
We have known and respected Roberto's work for many years. Only after Offi's expansion into, and focus upon Kids furniture in 2003, did we realize what a pioneer Roberto was. We are very happy to be collaborating with Roberto Gil, and have high expectations for the results. In addition to the Offi Kids re-introduction of some of his best Casa Kids pieces, Offi has introduced the Offi "Bebe" nursery collection including two Crib versions, a Changing table and a Storage cabinet designed by Roberto Gil.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and educated at Harvard University, Roberto Gil trained as an architect before delving into furniture design.
In 1992 he joined Casa Kids Collection Design, Inc., a Brooklyn based design/build furniture company. In the year 2000, and in partnership with Big Moon Furniture, a Brazilian manufacturer, Roberto Gil created CasaKids, a collection of contemporary children's furniture.
Inspired by vernacular farm furniture, Gerit Rietveld, Donald Judd and the character of children's cartoons, Roberto Gil's designs are very simple constructions avoiding superfluous decorative elements.
Gil's line of children's furniture has been sold most recently at the MoMA Design Store in New York as well as at the following venues: the Guggenheim Museum Store, Barney's New York; the Whitney Museum's Store Next Door, FAO Schwarz, SF MoMA, and The Land of Nod. Ocean catalog, London; Asplund catalog, Tokyo; Dovetusai galery, Milano; Vilac, Moirans-en-Montagne, France and Tok&Stok, Brazil.
Documentary filmmakers Bret Sigler and Liam Dalzell have captured some typical moments at Roberto Gil's shop:
